Two more questions...

I really appreciate everyone's patience. And please don't start throwing things at me :D My first question, is SWF's live rock pre-cured? And secondly, I was reading something about cycling my tank in the reef boards, and they were recommending turning the skimmer OFF during cycling...should I be doing that for a FO tank, too? My skimmer has been on since I got it a week ago! Thanks everyone, again, you're all lifesavers :)

swf.com is pre-cured but there is a certain amount of die-off with any shipment. As far as skimming during cycle is concerned I had my skimmer on full blast during my cycle and every time I added lr it helped clean the junk out of my tank big time. It was a big help in keeping my water conditions good during any die-off I experienced and my fish survived small spikes because of it.

swf l/r like said above is pre cured, you will get some die off during shipping. many people have told me to turn off the skimmer during the cycle. i did not skim during my cycle but i am sure many do with no problems. what i would think is that it may take a little longer to cycle with a skimmer. to each his own...

IMO, i would not skim or do water changes at all until after the cycle has completed, others do , but the excess garbage you are removing would only help with the cycle

Ok, Ed, so this is a wait for the cycling before buying LR, or this is a cycle with the LR just do water changes and skimming? :D If I wait until the tank is cycled, is the 25# of LR not going to just start the cycling all over again? I'm already trying to soak in everything I've learned over the last month, and I've done very well I think; however, I am still a beginner, so I'm easily confused. :)

OfALegend, I think for LR, what I'm reading is that it would be good to have your skimmer running during the curing/cycling.
I also answered your previous question on the fishing jumping/starving post. I got my LS/LR from Aquatic Critter and was able to cycle within 2 weeks. I don't have a large aquarium, though.
Their LR does not have much color or inverts, though - really basic stuff (small feathers, some coraline).
But I've been pretty happy with how my rocks keeping the water stable.

well lets see, i have polyps, mushrooms, stars,, clsms, macroalgaes, pnut and spagetti and bristle worms, lots of pods, snails, sponges(2 types thay i can see), feather dusters AND who knows what else, in my tank, none of which i purchased but hitchiked in on the rock, as far as toxicity goes, the bacteria will break everything down and the amonia will disipate, the nitrates will go up and so on, if you are cycling with lr, thaer is no need to do anything but wait, you will not speed it up , you will not help it, and it will take care of itself, you may lower the ammonia level some, but if you do enough to lower it significantly, IME(experience, not opinion) it will slow it down IF anything, and not only my experience, but others here on the board can attest to it too, once they stopped(after months) in days they had finished(finally)(you can search through past posts and get more input too. along with responses telling their results afterwards),
TO sum it up, you want the garbage in the water for the cycle(the water change does not remove the bacteria that you want but the garbage that feeds its growth), it does not hurt and only helps the cycle if anything, just clean off the excess sediment that is settling, water changes will not stop the cycle, but significant amounts can delay it, like i said,
i do agree somewhat with anthems theory on cycling, but we do differ in opinions on how to cycle(but differences in opinions do vary in this hobby), probably neither of us are completely wrong, there are many others who too have skimmed and changed h20 in the cycle just as there are others who have not, but IMO, most of the people who come looking because after months their tanks wont cycle are those who did the above mentioned things

Just set up a 75 gal. , 200 lbs. sand, 50 lbs. l/r. left the skimmer off, no water changes, 2 weeks to cycle. IMO thats the way to cycle a new tank!!! HTH

i do not have the experience that anthem has, i never once saw 1000 lbs of rock in my life(even cumulative, well in other systems i have, one had over 1200lbs), but this is where i stand and there is more than one person on the board who either agrees with me and or has ultimaltey had to stop water changes and or skimming in order to finally complete the cycle
this is what i base my opinions on, the past performance, adn my experiences which were similar, not 1000s of lbs of curing and cycling, so, our methods do vary some, but my responses are valid and justified as well

;) ;) gotchya, and do somewhat agree there too, we really had a nice and calm debate, as you and i have both mentionsed both will get there and will work, but we just both got to make sure they saw both sides of this coin, which IMO is a good thing, especially since we were able to do so without being rash or anything, i actually enjoyed that one(no falmein and arguing, it was nice to participate with you in this manner) and i got to see things from your perspective too
tanks, i forgive us both, lol :D
