In my 55gal. I have 1 Bicolor angel, 1 lawnmower blenny, 1 oci. Clown, 2 three stripe damsels, 1 domino damsel, 2 yellow tail damsels, 1 Mandarin Dragonet, 1 naso tang, 1 Condi Anemone, 1 Decorator crab, 1 Emerald Crab, 1 Sally Lightfoot Crab, a hand full of Blueleg Hermit crabs, 2 Scarlet Hermit Crab, 5 Astrea snails, 1 Chocolate Chip Starfish, 1 Pencil Urchin, and about four pounds of Live Rock. Does this seem like the max for this tank or can I add a Morish Idol, and about 30lbs of Live Rock?
In my 47gal I have 1orange shoulder tang 1domino Damsel, 1 three stripe damsel, 1 Emerald Crab, about 20 Blueleg Hermit Crabs, 2 Scarlet Hermit Crabs, 2 Brittle Starfish, 1 Chocolate Chip Starfish, and 1 Pencil Urchin. What I want to do with this tank is sell my CCS and all of my Damsels, add 40lbs of LR w/some corals and add a Snowflake Eel, and a Green Wolf Eel.
Any sugestions or thoughts?

I think you have a tank full and I would add 50 to 75 pounds of live rock for the load you got. I no thats not the answer you are looking for but when all these fish hit maturity you will be full up.

I do hope your planning on upgrading your tanks down the road. In your 47g, that orange shoulder tang grows huge!!! Green wolf eel would grow huge as well. You need to cover the tank pretty good so the eels don't crawl out. In your 55g same thing as well for a few of those fish. Morish Idol is very hard to keep alive! I do hope it's a well established tank since your keeping a mandarin in there, you don't have enough live rocks for that fish. They mainly feed on copepods, unless you can get it to eat frozen food, a reefer friend of mine feeds his frozen food and it does just fine. You need to do some major research before you go any further!!! Good Luck! :happyfish

thanks for the reply and yes these tanks have been running for about 18 months or so and ive got my eye on a couple of 125gal. tanks right now. ive got my Mandarin Dragonet eating frozen and he is doing good. As soon as I get my camara out of the shop i'll post some pics of both tanks. on the 47g ive got an eclipse III hood that incloses the hole top. that idea for the 50 to 75 Lbs. of LR is that for both tanks or is that for each tank?
Thanks again for the reply.

by the way Just how big does a orange shoulder tang get? When I got him he was about 1 1/2 inch long and a greenish grey color with the off color spot on his shoulder. Now he is about 4 to 5 inches and yellow with the off color shoulder you can see the line on his side where his color will split in adult hood it is faint but there. I know that this is off of the subject of size but I just had to brag man he looks good now.
thanks again for all the info. everyone I know has bigger tanks than I and are of little help on tanks of this size.

thank you for the reply. Ive been looking at some different venders of LR and different types of LR. What is the best type of LR for my plans or does it matter. when all I wanted was pretty fish to look at this was easy and now that i'm getting into this as a hobby and not just some thing to look at I am finding it hard to find answers to my questions so thank you again for all of your help. I doubt that I can afford that much LR all at once but I plan on getting both tanks up to that weight by the end of this month if not the next. would I be better off trading off my orange shoulder and getting a smaller tang and if so which one do you think will go with my eel choice.

I have fiji rock and I have allways been happy with it. You can get it from this site and it is good qualitity rock. As far as the tang most would say you need 75 gallons to keep 1 happy and healthy but the choice is yours to make. I have a blue hippo and he is a beautiful fish and does fine. He is in a 65 gallon now but they are prone to ick when stressed. A good diet that LIONFISH recomended has cured that problem but they can be a handful. How about a angel, coral beauty or flame they are nice fish and reef safe.

Thank you for the reply, I will look into the care of the angels mentioned in your post and see if I find one I like. and thank you for all the info. I am planning on buying the 20 to 25 lbs fiji rock deal they offer on this site on payday.
thanks again.

your tanks are too small for tangs, they like swimming room. IMO, adding that much more lr would take away from thier swimming room.
what are your levels? if you don't need the added filtration, I wouldn't add that much lr.

Ive been doing saltwater tanks for about 18 months, but only in the last 6 have i truely gotten into the hobby. (Still a newbee and wanting to learn as much as I can) I dont just want to keep my fish alive I want them to thrive. the last thing added to the 55gal was the decorator crab and that was 2 weeks ago other than that every thing else has been in there close to 6 to 8 months or longer. ( Sorry I lied the last thing added was Live rock a week ago). what is the growing rate for the Naso Tang? I am trying to get a 125gal. to replace the 55 but that isn't going to happen fo
r a while.

The growth rate for Naso Tang is pretty slow. So you have a while to go yet before it gets really big. :happyfish
