two snowflake eel, ending badly

Everything we read said that 2 snowflakes would be OK if they went in together. They came in from SWF, pretty close in size but one was a bit bigger. 4-5 good caves in a 55 hex.
Everything was cool for the first week then all hell broke loose.
Larger eel starting getting agressive and the smaller started looking for ways out. Modified the skimmer box, tubes and covers and kept him. Today, found the smaller one on the floor; must have gotten out at the small openings around the tubes, He was pretty dried out, but alive.
Put him back in all stiff and dry and the bigger one went to town on him bitting him and wrapping, spining, tearing. Facinating, but hard to watch. I do not expect him to make the night.
Lesson learned, sad. We were planning on bringing him the LFS this weekend

I attempted 2 snowflakes in a 150. Story similar to yours except after the first escape I brought the larger one back to the LFS. It's pretty amazing how long they can survive out of water, mine looked like beef jerky but made a total recovery.

Sad this AM, the smaller one is lying on the bottom with his head and upper jaw lifting with each breath.
