I'd hate to think this, but it looks dyed to me. The way the dark color goes up the spikes a little doesn't look natural.

I also beleive this is a dyed starfish. I beleive this is your usual chocolate chip with orange and black dye injected into it. I have not seen a starfish that looks like this before (does not mean that it doesn't exist naturally like that) but i have my doubts.

i dont think its dyed. look how the color blends on the spikes in the center of the star. its seams fairly natural to me. but who knows they could be really good at injecting fish. however i have never heard of a dyed SW fish before. if it is dyed thye have sunk to a new low

I dont think its dyed. If you look close you can see the light and dark black pattern on the body that almost forms a tye dye pattern. Dont think the LFS are that good. That and the spikes gradually change into black. JMO,

Yes, they inject dye into glassfish.

The starfish has spikes between his legs and chocolate stars do not.(At least none I have seen) His belly is orange and black marble. And his little suckers are light orange. The same lfs (different location) have little green with orange spikes and they call them Bali stars but i couldn't find any on the internet by that name.

the fish store i work at has some stars that look almost identical to these. the only real diffence is these are red and white. they might be in the same family as the one you have.

The star is a Protoreaster, effectively like a general or chocolate chip star. These stars have a wide variety of color patterns. No need to assume it is dyed. I have never heard this about seastars and frankly I think it would be fatal and or result in exceedingly high cost. But it is possible I suppose.

Anyway, it is definitely, for sure, NOT REEF SAFE. It should be spot fed a wide variety of food, meaty mostly but it would benefit from algae wafers or nori as well.
