To avoid the cyano and just ugly sand bed that can have that hint of red on it does this mainly relate to the type of water one is using??
What is the main difference between the following:
Distilled Water
RO Water
Purified Water
What effect do they have on the tank??

Distilled
Tap water and rain water are not pure. They contain salts and dissolved gases. Water is often distilled to increase purity. Most of the salts are left behind but the water may still contain dissolved gases. The presence of carbon dioxide reduces the pH of the water considerably.

(Same as Purified) Water which has been physically processed to remove its contaminants and its impurities.

RO
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reverse_osmosis
Reverse osmosis (RO) is a separation process that uses pressure to force a solution through a membrane that retains the solute on one side and allows the pure solvent to pass to the other side. More formally, it is the process of forcing a solvent from a region of high solute concentration through a membrane to a region of low solute concentration by applying a pressure in excess of the osmotic pressure. This is the reverse of the normal osmosis process, which is the natural movement of solvent from an area of low solute concentration, through a membrane, to an area of high solute concentration when no external pressure is applied.

So may I ask, what does tap water contain in it that is bad for the tank and makes RO water best??

The tank is more touchy. We can drink the water and it is gone in 24 hours. Water in tank is there long time.
If its supplied it will have chlorine etc. If the pipes are old that can cause problem. We have well water, that can have mineral, lime....high ph.....hard water...etc that arent good. Phosphate and silicate make the tank have algae and diatom problems.
