I ran a Uv sterilizer for a time and did notice higher outputs from my protien skimmer during this time, whether it was from the stuff the UV was killing or the benifit of it makeing things easier to remove I dont know. I have ran a reef with and without one, I run without now for a more energy effecient setup and lack any visible differences in tank quality when I ran it. I would run it If I was having a freefloating algae bloom or a serious disease issue. IMO you dont need it, but it can be benificial in some ways.
