So this morning my 3 year old daughter ran in my room to tell me that my 2 year old son was feeding my fish....
I thought I was going to cry when I ran into the living room. All I could see was red. He poured an entire jar of flake food in my 55 gal reef tank. I was panicked. I looked in my laundry room to see how much water I had ready to realize that my shipment of salt hasn't made it yet. I had to jump in the car and drive over an hour to get salt from my LFS. I'm happy that I had my QT up and running. I put most of my coral in the QT and I put my LR in buckets. I waited for it all to settle to the bottom of the tank so I could vacuum it out. I ended up putting in about 10 lbs of new sand too. After it was all said and done I wound up doing a 50% water change and reaquascaped my DT. When I was putting my LR back in the tank I couldn't see very well and I just kinda piled it in. I'm still not sure how It's going to look in the morning. I hope I don't have a huge ammonia spike over night that kills everything. I'm preparing 35 gals of SW tonight so I can do another water change tomorrow if I need it.

I also found out the hard way. I put a child proof lock on the stand. I also keep my food/additives in the garage.
I remember reading a thread where a reefers son helped dad clean his tank by putting dish soap (anti-bacteria soap) in his tank. Bubbles everywhere.
Just be glad you have a QT tank.

he's 2. I really cant do too much to him. It was my fault that I left the food on top of my tank. It was just vey sad for me. It took me 8 hours to get my tank put back together...

I know. Now I'm worried that he's going to try to put stuff in the Nano I set up in his room.

I made the canopy. Its a 60 ltr tank. I don't think that he'll be able to open the front of it. I used magnets to hold it on with no handles on it. I even have a hard time getting it open. But for now the canopy is sitting on my kitchen counter. I'm waiting to get a piece of sheet metal to use as a heat shield for the light. Then I'll put it on the nano.

Sorry to hear about this bgrae,
Man! and I thought that trying to get my daughter to stock tapping on the tank was a problem!

well this morning the tank was still a bit cloudy. I'm going to test the water after breakfast and replace my filter floss.
Here is the before pic

Good thing I wasn't drinking milk when I read that one.

Well I tested the water after dinner. It was another long day for me. any way my Ammonia is up to .50. I did a 40% water change and it dropped just a little. My Nitrates are up too. They were at 20 PPM. I think that my nitrate test is old though. I bought the kit 3 years ago. I'm going to buy new tests tomorrow. I'm waiting for my RO/DI unit to finish filtering my water so I can do another water change tomorrow. The Nitrites look good though, still 0.

What kind of stand do you have the tank on that a 2 year old was able to get into the top of it? I'd be concerned about him falling in if he can get into it that easily...

you got any kids? The top of my tank is about 5 ft tall and my 2 yr old could easily fill my tank with food if it wasn't for my 60 lb wooden hood. Those kids can get into anything!

My tank is 4 and a half feet high. I don't have a canopy on it but I do have a glass top on it. My son dragged my end table over to the tank so he could reach it. Since then I moved the table out of the room and I put all the food in the kitchen on top of the fridge.
On a good note all my corals are doing fine and I only lost one fish. It was a dart fish, now my other dart fish is lonely.

My ammonia is dropping, as of today its back down to .25 hopefully in a few days it will be back to normal.
