SO recently i bought a PC coral life light and i figured i should buy some coral !
i ended up buying a toadstool leather and a eather hammerhead or frogspawn coral and a free devils hand leather.
Ugh Brutal ive had so many problems with the frogspawn and toadstool.
a few days ago i found that i had a hydroid on my toadstoola nd i had to chop off part of the leather. hopefully it will recover though it hasnt pimpled up since and there are now bleach spots on it

Today iw as looking at my FS coral and i noticed Aiptasia!!! Even worse then the damn hydroid do i had to pretty much cut the dead calcium that the FS was attached to and remove it aswell as the aiptasia.
Pretty much the only coral that hasnt caused me trouble is my free devils hand ( my favorite coral by far, looks amazing and it has yellow dots on it aswell)
anyways it seems liek coral are so discuraging i bought them at a reliable fish store and been getting my fish there before i even started a SW tank and it was FW 2/3 corals have had problems i know i should have a quarentine tank but honestly im broke and i cant spend moeny on another coral light :S
i dono if i should just give on coral
Sorry just venting anyone else have had this much trouble wiht corals?

Deep breath..in with the good, and out with the bad...
Aiptasia is not the end of the world, leathers are tough and can pull through most anything. Nobody I know QTs coral.
Here is what to do:
Aiptasia- get peppermint shrimp, or use Joes juice or any product for killing it, even boiling water in a syringe will work
Toadstool...just cut out the bad part, where there is a chunk of toadstool no matter how small, a new leather will grow. It may take a month for it recover, but it will recover.
For your devils hand...keep it out of bright light, have a power head pointed so water flows over and around it not just at it.
OH, and YES we all have problems like this, but the beauty of live coral is worth it to us..because we are crazy people.
For all corals...turn off the skimmer for the day once each week, and feed the coral phytoplankton or feeding frenzy....or any other coral food you may want to try.

You don't have strong light so yours up top is fine.
Toadstools can take a beating -- it probably just needs to shed and take time to heal. I've gone after mine with scissors numerous times and have a bunch of babies and a great looking huge mother piece.

Your devils hand is not doing great...it is closed up. It will have little stars all over it when it opens. That is what those little dots are...hidden stars.

My advice is to get a bottle of flatworm exit and put a drop into the bag whenever you get a new coral before putting it into your tank. I wish I just got aptasia, peppermint shrimp will annihilate that. Flatworms are nearly impossible to get rid of, though! For most other ailments, I'd examine the specimen well before buying. Flatworms hide well, though.

Unless you have a huge outbreak of flatworms, do not resort to using a treatment that would adversely effect your entire tank. There are alot of different methods of getting rid of flatworms. Seek other remedies before adding faltworm exit or any other remedy. Flat worms are easy to get rid of if you cut down on feedings and siphon them out.

you put 4 drops of iodide everyday?
hopefully your testing for it before dumping it in there.. its never good to just throw in some chemicals when your unsure of what is already in there..
btw, nothing looks wrong with your hammer coral.

Couldn't disagree more. If you wait until it's a major outbreak, the flatworms dying en masse can nuke your tank. Flatworm Exit only affects flatworms. I wish I'd dumped a tube of Flatworm Exit into my tank the day I noticed my first patch of flatworms. Instead I waited and tried to get rid of them in other ways. Flatworms are photosynthetic, so the only way to control them is to kill the light.

ok I'm not trying to be mean but most problems that I see in tanks are owner malfunction problems and don't worry I know I do this too. what I am saying is most of the time there is a real problem is comes form a small problem that was not researched right and then some one did some thing that made things worse and not better if given time most tanks will balance out and not crash. I am a compulsive buyer but I do a follow some guide lines at the store and if I don't at least know how much light, water flow and food it likes I don't buy.
the real question is why do you have so many flat worms? they should balance out to how much food your cuc is getting and if you have too many of them maybe your feeding a little much

This is off topic but to answer your question...I feed my fish once everyday, but towards the evening...I want my algae eaters to nibble the algae on the rocks throughout the day.
Cyano is caused by overfeeding, not enough water flow, and too much phosphates in the water. So when you feed your fish, make sure that in 1 minute it is all gone. Check your power heads and arrange them so there are no dead spots. Using a stick with a ribbon attached, will help you find where you have or haven't got a good water current.
Test for phosphates, then if you have a problem with that, use a phosphate remover to start, and then wait a few days and retest. Run purigen in the filter to keep it in check. If you have allot of cyano, phosphate tests will read 0 because the cyano is feeding on it.
Hope this helps

when asking how often to feed you are going to get many many different answers to that question. if i remember correctly a member on here feeds upto 7 times a day. i feed twice a day morning and evenings. just have to find what works best for you and not to over feed make sure all the food is eaten. and you also have to take into concideration on what kinds of fish your feeding.
and with corals i have cut back to feeding once a week and they are doing just fine.
