Our ***** here in Wilmiington, NC has actually cleaned up their act a bit. They had tanks so bad; it was very sad. They had a dog faced puffer with ick so bad it lost an eye. I stopped going in there after that. This was about 3 1/2 months ago. Someone that works with my husband told him they were surprised at the conditions in the store. They were actually better! We went and checked it out and were very shocked at the conditions of the tanks. Tanks with sick animals were marked "Not for sale" and they had a reasonable number of fish in the sasltwater tanks (as reasonable as any other store anyway) and I didn't see any ick. I did manage to get some very nice live rock with the beginnings of coraline algae on it. I am guessing that someone was hired that knew what they are doing or they got enough complaints that they couldn't just brush off anymore.
Now, if the other lfs in the area would stop going downhill, maybe we could get some good looking fish in the area, oh well.

I've said this before, I'll say it again.
If you do not like *****, and many people like to complain, then DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM THEM - not cat food, not dog toys. NOTHING. I hear people complain, but they are shopping there? I know very little about what my ***** does because I purposely do not shop there unless it is an emergency. But if you buy anything, you support what they do with anything.
The damsel thing, BTW, is still a tried and true method to cycle a tank. And for a 20g, you would use somewhere between 4-6 damsels. I don't care for it, but it is a viable method.
Many local LFS have fish commonly treated with copper. That is quite customary. They just may not tell you. Damsels are commonly beaten up because they are naturally territorial, treated like feeder goldfish, and are of little value. But that is not unique to ***** for sure.
So my main complaint with ***** threads is that they are an easy target. The are accused of things that are common in LFS' around the country, but no one says a thing about them.
I do not think it is fair to call ***** employees such names. Many do care for what they do. Many are knowledgable people. Use your common sense for your *****...but if you don't like what you see, LEAVE THE STORE WITH EMPTY HANDS!

I agree with Ophuria. If you don't like *****, don't go there.
I have gone to a few strictly aquarium stores and been much more disappointed than I have with my local *****. Given, I haven't been to many others, but there are people at the ***** that opened just this year in my area that are great. The lead fish guy used to be at another location in our area that is very well known as a great fish resource. I trust what I hear from him. He also tells me right away if he doesn't know an answer, but will find out for me from his resources. The fish tanks, salt, and fresh, and all the other animals in the store for that matter, are well maintained.
Everyone does things a little differently. If your local ***** isn't up to your standards, find a retailer in or around your area that is, and go there.
This board has been a great rsource to me as a beginner in the hobby. I hope to be able to get good constructive advice here from those who are more experienced than me. The negative comments don't really help anyone.

i'm gonna let the cat out of the bag and let u know that i work at a *****. i've been to a couple because i started working there part time during college. i've learned a lot from working there and from this thread. now i have a great knowledge about saltwater fish. i always learn new things too. ***** has strict rules about how to keep fish, even though sometimes i don't agree with some things, for instance, we are not allowed to use correct medication. that doesn't mean we use the wrong medication, they just don't let us use the medication that would work the best. with the exception of melafix. you will see dead fish in tanks from time to time cause that's what happens at fish stores. fish die all the time at every petstore, they are usually dealt with in the mornings before you get there or right away before anyone see's. there are gonna be the occasional employee that will talk out of his !@# but instead of relying on what someone says at your petstore do research before so you can make a decision. i'm not claiming ***** is perfect and even though i do hate working there(pays the bills till i find a real job) i still can't bad mouth them for the way they treat animals and their policies.

Ummm, if you're talking saltwater fish, I'm sorry but you're incorrect. Aside from the clowns, very few of the saltwater fish sold anywhere are captive born fish.

The ***** I work at has a huge aquatics section. 1 of 3 *****'s in the country that does. I have live rock, inverts, hard and soft corals, refugiums...but...like I said, 1 of 3. and...this ***** will only hire aquatics kids if they know what they are doing...Trust me, we have to take tests.

what is thier reasoning for not useing the correct meds. on a sick fish. that doesnt make sence. you wouldnt give a dog or a cat the wrong thing if it was sick. so why give a fish something that doesnt help. im confused....

i went to ***** and got a fish and i knew that 3 tanks down there was ich i pointed it out to the manager and he said it will be ok bc they each have their own filters so i got it, i also told him i didnt have qt tank (i do now, even though to late) he said it would be fine. the next day that fish was covered in ich and within a matter of days all my fish had died. i called and complained the manager said he would call me back in 3 days it has now been2 weeks and still no word from him. i asked them what they do when they get ich and he said they tear there tank down and start over, i told him that isnt good advise bc someone with a home tank it isnt that easy. i have called there several times and they say they will give him the message, i think ***** should stick with what they know something about, i am from indiana so all they have working in there is collage students that when u ask them something about a fish they have to go get someone or look in a book that is 3-4 inches thick and they never find the fish they are looking for so they will tell you to come back latter, it is nuts there, and when i first started going there i often wondered y they wasnt busy since there is only 2 swf stores in the area them being one of them and i soon realized. the other fish store is now charging to do water test if you bought fish from ***** bc they said they are tired of fixing their problems.
