if its a new tank its diatoms and will go away in time. the snails and hermits will help along with a lowered photo period will also help but mainly time.

How old is your system? It is likely just a diatom outbreak. It will eventually go away. It is ugly, but nothing to be concerned about.

I prefer not to have to many and if I do I go for the scarlet reef hermits they stay smaller also make sure you have plenty of empty shells or they can and will go after the snails for their homes.

Just be aware that no amount of hermits or snails are going to keep the diatoms in check completely. As Mike said, don't add too many. They will not find enough food source and may starve.

I beat my diatoms with 10% water changes every week.
what temp is your tank? It should be 75. I noticed that my tank had alot of diatoms when the temp was above 80.

Diatoms!
If you fan them off the rocks and scrub your tank walls - they will just return. It is best to just let them be until they have consumed all of the phosphates and silicate.
This happens with most new tanks, you used tap water right?

I agree with mike. They happen no matter what. Another thing that could help is that you really dont need your tank lights on all day if there is nothing in there. This will help prevent unwanted hair algae from growing also.

Diatoms will happen no matter what. Personally I like to leave the lights on as normal. I have never had hair algae once.

My tank is over 2 mons now,
And I've been getting so much brown stuff on sand only.
LR are perfectly fine.
I still dont' understand why.
Phosphate is 0, the paremeter is so good.
I am blaming the new DI water source I got from a different lfs.
It's a lot cheaper than other places.
But I will quit getting water from them for the next few weeks or so and use the previous water source.
I think that's where my problem came from.
Been 2 weeks.

2 months is not an older system. Expect more diatoms. They should settle down pretty soon though. I was still getting them after 4 months in my tank.
