Heres a topic I havent come across yet. I was looking at my new filters instructions and it occured to me that I have never seen a UL listing on any of my aquarium equiptment. HMMM anybody know what/why this is? Why its on almost every other thing electric I own?

Here is what I have for you, straight from their web site.
Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) is an independent, not-for-profit product safety testing and certification organization. We have tested products for public safety for more than a century. Each year, more than 17 billion UL Marks are applied to products worldwide.
Since our founding in 1894, we have held the undisputed reputation as the leader in U.S. product safety and certification. Building on our household name in the United States, UL is becoming one of the most recognized, reputable conformity assessment providers in the world. Today, our services extend to helping companies achieve global acceptance for their products, whether it is an electrical device, a programmable system or a company's quality process.

does anyone know why you can buy some taam rio pumps that are ul listed and the same models that are not?

Sorry, I haven't a clue. Possibly the ones that are not UL listed are cheaper. UL is a not for profit organization, that does not mean it is free. Companies still have to pay to get their items tested and have the labels put on. <img src="graemlins//confused.gif" border="0" alt="[confused]" />

Thanks I did know what UL is and what they're doing. Basically they take a product and abuse the hell out of it to test its integerity and saftey. It just struck me as odd that I dont see it much in this industry where everything is in water. they must have a problem getting things to pass or they would be listed (Which helps in product liability lawsuits and such)
Thats really weird that a rio pump can be either. In that case I would be VERY careful with the one that is not. That means they paid to have the thing tested and still cant list all of them. Is there a price difference?

By the way I started this thread because I got popped by 12 volts at 1000 or so amps at work yesterday and I would like to once again ask everyone to unplug your tank before putting your hands in. it ain't fun to be electrocuted.

That is great advice! I do the same. It takes about 1 second to flip the switch to the off position. Saltwater is very conductive as we all know. It just takes 1 amp to stop your heart. You are very lucky. The good thing about AC power, is that it repels rather than DC power, which doesn't let you go.

yes, there is a price difference on the rio pumps, usually around 3-4 dollars. There are two or three models where you have the option of choosing ul listed or not. It just doesn't make sense to me why they would get them certified and then not use it on them (or some of them). Very weird, I guess if I ever get another one, I'll call the company to find out.
