My father has some old live rock that's been in his tank that seems like it died off. he must have done something wrong.
my question is, if i take that live rock can i follow the "how to cure live rock" info i find? and revive it?
or is the live rock basically just for looks now?
TY!

From what i know(not much),i think you can reseed it.It now has become base rock and you can get some more live rock in the tank and it will in time become live again.LR basically means it has alot of tiny living things that make the rock home.

ok, i have done some research on how to cure live rock(just purchased some for my new tank) and i was wondering if at the same time i could work on curing my fathers.
maybe just scrub it down and stick it in the tank and leave it? but follow the curing process on the new rock only?

sorry i mean it's in his fully running tank but nothing grew on it, i don't think he ever cured it.
Sso i figured maybe i can cure it the same time i cure all the rock i just purchased.

If it's been in a tank it has either cured or it is curing. I don't think you understand the meaning of "Cured" live rock. Cured just means that any of the organisms that were alive on the rock have died off and the die off has stopped.
Uncured live rock is still very much alive. BUT the sponges, algae, and whatever other creatures that were exposed to air/long shipping are dying.
If it looks completely dead, maybe the tank was treated with some medication? And if that is the case, no, you won't be able to save the rock. Copper is a key ingredient in a lot of fish medications and it destroys everything that is not a fish, including the bacteria in the rock that makes the rock "live".

The most import piece of what makes Live Rock 'Live' is the bacteria. As long as the temperature and salinity have been fine, then it is still alive.
<edit>
Oh, also no copper treatments as Tex said.

maybe that's what happen, he put some treatment in the water and it killed off the rock. i'll ask him that.
I guess my idea of "live rock" is what i seen on some pictures on the sites. it shows some stuff growing out of it. there's nothing on the rock he has. it started getting neat looking things on it. now it's just a chunk of rock.haha

The rock could be totally white and still alive. Live Rock is one book that can't always be judged by its cover.

Yes it can be revived. Buy some more "live" rock and mix it up.. it'll take a few months but eventually it will all look the same.
