My understanding is that Live Sand is a waste of money as regular sand will get seeded eventually anyway and become Live Sand. If you have to cycle a tank, save some money and get regular sand.

Okay fair enough. Does the same hold true for live rock then? The LFS guy who seems pretty knowledgeable told me that it was unnecessary to have live rock sand or plants for a fish only tank which is what I want. He said all the fish are just going to eat the plants anyway so get some nice fake looking ones, but I am huge fan of real plants. I think they look better and are better for the fish but won't the sand and rock do fine if I get regular stuff from the stores??

i started with a fish only tank and got board with it really fast. so fast i took it down and am starting over with a reef tank. and i dident have live rock or sand. just a crushed coral bed. and the fish thats it. but its boring as all hell.
