So we are thinking about keeping some of the kittens that we are fostering. However we currently do not have a cat and do not miss the smell of a litter box at all. What are some of the tricks that y'all use for this wonderful smell?

change it every 3 days....There is kitty litter product on the market that looks like wood pellets and it breaks down as the cat uses the box, this stuff is great...unfortunately I don't remember the name of it and only found it once.
You could also have one room devoted to the box....tht will help keep the smell down...but ultimately changing it regularly is the trick....(and incense..lol)

This thing literally saved my life, with a good scented clumping litter, you will get virtually get no smell, assuming you clean and throw out the disposable receptacle. www.littermaid.com

fresh step kitty litter masks the smell the best. I keep the cat box in the garage and clean it every day. I never have any yucky cat oders in the house.

Cool, these are all good ideas! If we can figure out a good way to keep the smell down then it looks like Fred will not have to worry about finding a new home. Of course she would need one of her sisters would need to stay also.

we have 15 cats currently, we use multiple litter boxes, and scoop them three times a day. first thing in the morning as soon as we return from work and just before bed. we use scoopable litter and change it out every week for a new batch as the little pieces that break free of the clumps will cause odor eventually. works pretty good I cant stand the smell of cat pee and poo.

I have two persian cats
WE use "swheat scoop" litter. It is little hard pieces of wheat and its all natural. IMO the recyclable/pellet kinds just get soggy and smell worse, and all those chemical-weird litters are just hazardous to the cats health.
The swheat scoop has no scent, dries out waste and is easy to clean,,, and chemical and dust free.
If your kitty has really bad poop smell, I would look to see if the food you are feeding is the culprit. Whenever I give my cats a 'treat' like some kind of canned gravyish food... just like people... things can get stinky! Stay away from crappy foods like fancy feast.
I would also check with the vet if they can expell the anal glands on the cat. Its gross but it can be pretty stinky when the glands get full. Full glands= stinky kitty butt.
Good Luck!

So you got the "puss in boots" look huh?? haha.
I had a cat once when I was younger. I kept the litter box in the bathroom. Used that litter that clumps, can't remember the brand, but everytime anyone went to the bathroom, we'd scoop it out and flush it down the toilet.
never had any smell cause the box literally got cleaned several times a day and it didn't inconvenience anyone.

I have 4 cats and have 3 cat boxes, the saying is to have a box for every cat and then an extra one. I clean it at least once a day and sometimes 2, add a little fresh kitty litter after each cleaning and I also add baking soda 2 times a week.
People dont even know I have cats unless they see them

whenever you change the litter wipe the box down with vinegar (unless you are using a liner). when my cat lived in the house thats what we did and no one ever noticed an odor.

Hmmmm I seem to be noticing a pattern here. Clean the box out often to avoid the odors. Don't do what we did before and wait till it really gets bad, ask the other person if they are going to change the cat box, wait a couple of more days, then finally get fed up and change it out.

Tizzo, well let's just say when a furry little kitten makes it her life's goal to crawl up on your lap and purr every chance it gets.....it is just like the puss in boots eyes.

If you just have one cat, look at getting a litter box that has a cover with a door in the front. We have one right in our living room, literally behind the couch, and as long as its cleaned weekly, I've never noticed the smell.
That said, the best way to keep the litterbox clean is to teach the cat to go outside.
Oh, and if you have any large potted plants in the house, watch out. My wife's cat ruined a very nice 6' tall tree we had in our living room.
