sorry about your fish deaths but your pet store lead you down the wrong road, as for your clown fish, only the tank raised ones will live in a new tank very long, a true or false percula caught in the wild will not live through the tank cycle and if it does most of the time it will turn a darker color and one or both eyes will enlarge and get cloudy and some times the tang raised ones will not live, as for for the inverts, you need a ton of light before they will even think about surviving, you will need no less then 2 watts per gal so if you have a 40 gal tank you will need a min of 88 watts of lighting, very expensive and requires fans to remove the heat from the light fixtutes if you decide to purchase one, make sure you get one that is 50/50 not a full blue or 10,000k your fish will not like it. as for your tang, tangs require a large tank 100 gal or better, they require lots of vegetable matter in their diet also, but what probably got him was the oxygen level in your tank, or the lack of it should i say, you should only have 1 inch of fish per 10 gal for the first 6 months, then you can double it. you can use the 2 inch method like the guy at your fish store said but they have to be very hardy fish, and you will need major filtatrion (min of 10 times your tank size per hour filtration) and a must is a protein skimmer, if you dont already have one go buy one asap, i have found the "bak pak" is the best on the market for the money, it will save you lots of grief and money down the road. air stones are also a must, especially in a new aquarium, you need at least 2 in a 40 gal, one at each corner front or rear about 2 or 3 inches from the bottom, this will help break the surface of the water and let the built up c02 escape and help get fresh oxygen in the tank, if your fish have rapid gill movement or their mouth stays open all the time, that mean they are mot gettin enough fresh oxygen this will also make your ph/alkalinity and a host of other thnigs difficult to maintain..
