unicorn tang

Most fish can to some degree, turning darker or more pale or developing other patterns...and being a large active swimmer they can get cramped in smaller tanks.

when I saw him at the lfs he was a beautiful greyish blue, while netting and the whole way to his new home he turned to a brown with whiteish spots. now after 6 hours in my tank he is back to the blueish grey.
after the guy at the lfs netted him and gave me the bag i told him he got the wrong fish it looked that different

Please know that fish will grow to 24"and requires lots of swimming space even as a juvenile. I hope that you do not have that fish in a 55 gallon tank. If so, it will die soon from stress...even if a juvenile. You need a very large tank to house that fish comfortably.

does the lopezi tang change its color and pattern when stressed or frightened

Nearly all of these fish will change color/pattern in some way when stressed, frightened or sleeping. And none, I will agree, are suitable for a 4' tank for very long. I've seen some tiny one's for sale that might work for a year or so, but that is about it. These are really
active swimmers even for a tang - unicorns, vlamingis, all...

now he is in a 55 gal, but I have ordered a custom 250 gal to be built in our new house that he will be going into in july. I am just trying to get stock now so I can get ready.

This being a local food fish in Hawaii, its capture for either food or aquarium fish collection purposes is REGULATED and can only be taken starting at nine inches. With these regulations you can see it is a fish that is only suitable for large showsize tanks to insure it has plenty of room. This Unicorn Fish can reach large sizes up to 20, possibly 24 inches. Because of its size and roaming nature it is recommended for only VERY large aquariums.
If it is a 9" fish it will die soon from stress. I do not think it will make march much less July. You may wish to consider returning the animal for a credit or another fish. My advice would be buy one when you have the appropriate home for the animal. I think both you and the animal would be happier. Just my opinion...others may feel differently.

I am not certain it is truly a unicorn...there are a couple of similar tangs - vlamingi, lopezi and unicorn at least that are probably given names interchangeably.
I have seen some very small vlamingi (I believe) tangs for sale at the LFS. Probably, without a book or some background or having them all side by side, it would be difficult to tell them apart for most.
I am glad to know there is a larger tank on the way. But to be honest, I used to care for a relatively small vlamingi (probably 9 ") in a 3500g tank. He could move around that tank and make it look pretty limiting. You really don't appreciate them until you've seen them in huge tens of thousands of g tanks. Spectacular.
