Unicorn Tang

Ok that is what I was thinking. I couldnt pass up a deal they gave me on a 1.5" one at $10 at a LFS so I got my 30long running for right now and then I do have a 120 long that it will be able to go to alittle later and then I am going to build either a 190 or a 240 in a couple years.

I wouldnt get it unless you have a 240 already. There is no telling if you will ever upgrade and its not fair to the fish to just put it in a tank temporarily, especially if its going to turn into more of a long term thing.

I would have to agree....Certainly a good deal, but I have heard of these guys growing a foot in one year
....I.E. one of the fastest growing fish there is in the hobby......I would wait, they are not particularly expensive fish as it is, but they do require huge homes.

I have already bought a 240 back in august but had to sell it due to job loss but am making more than before so money isnt an issue. I am just going to build it this time and save money that way and also this one with be acrylic. I can get a 4' x 8' and 1/2" thick sheet for $150 a sheet. The tank will be built this coming summer when our extra room is finished.
My question was if a 240 would be long enough for it? Or would a 120" long tank be needed. I am making sure I get everything set for when it is time to build.

Okie dokie, IMO an 8 foot tank is enough space for one, I have seen adults in 240 or 300, we just have to not overdo the LR and give them plenty of swimming space and room to turn around.

Ok, so maybe do the 96" x 36" x 24"(or 18"). Is that alot better or not enough for the cost? I am sorry for seeming like I was jumping down someones throught. My apologized for that. Yes if I hadnt have already bought one before and now that my wife was fine with it I would even think about it but she is the one that wanted this fish.
I also got a great deal on a Male Japanese Swallowtail for $50 from the same place. Another reason why the unicorn went into the 30Long is that way I can keep an eye on it to make sure it is eating and doing good. It ate the first night and hasnt stopped.
I have been thinking about getting a banded bamboo cat shark. So which would be best for it as well. I guess he would be more the problem than the Unicorn.

Hindsight is always 20/20, but I really wish I had spent the extra dough and gone 96x30x24, I like the height at 24 inches, but I wish I had a little bigger footprint.....Of course don't we always wish we had a bigger tank

I'm sure I don't need to tell you, but for sharks, the wider the tank, the better off you are.
Swallowtail is a cool reef-safe Angel, maybe you could get a female to join him.

Yes that is completely true about always wanting bigger than you have after you have it.
Ok that is what I was thinking for the shark and if I remember correctly a 36" wide tank is preferred.
Oh yes they are cool. It has nice streamers and all.
I feed the fish again tonight and that Unicorn sure can eat alot for its very small size. It has alot of those blue spots over the top half of its body like a Vlamingi Tang does.
Admin please dont delete this as it is just the best representative pic I can find of my fish......

Are you saying this just looks like your fish? If this is your fish than you have a vlaminigi. Unicorns have a horn on there head and no blue spots.

Hmmmm, The picture actually looks like a juvi Naso Lopezi to me....Kind of tough to tell, the Unicorns don't start to grow a horn until they hit 7 inches or more.

yes that is exactly what my tang looks like.
I have looked at several different sites and they have it names N. Lopezi or N. Vlamingi.
So do you know the differences in the two?
Whats ya'lls experiences with them(either).

Sure...First, don't ever, ever post pics or links to a competitor website. Second, this looks more like a Lopezi to me, but if your "other" site is listing this as a Unicorn, then I can't rightly say that I am an expert. Either way, very nice fish....

Ok then......about posting the pic I know we are not suppose to and like I said in that post. How else was I going to get an answer to my question if that was the best pic I could find of my fish. I do not shop from them and never will. They dont even list that fish on their website any longer. It was from another post on yahoo.com Q&A
