hahaha alright, florida joe, dont know how u took my last post, but with my DT and FT doing fine. this gives me something new to toy with about the hobby. yeah there just rocks, but that have value, i basically want them for when i get a good frag of something. attach it to the rock and let is spread in the frag tank. then do with the rock wut ever comes up.
No my friend you misunderstood my meaning. Its not the rock its what is growing on and in it that’s of value to you. Think of the rock as a blank canvas on with you will paint with all the living things that will grow on it, in it and make it their home

exactly. i want the rock for future frags. mainly zoo's. but being a bigger rock, i think its something different from using rubble pieces. we are both not new to this, i understand the fragging thing and all. just basically want to be able to salvage these rocks for use in my frag tank, on the value thing. i was going more like i already have the rock for free, someone said something bout 40 bucks. to hell with spending money, wen cost can be cut by salvaging these rocks

wow glad to see some other people on this board trust the bleach method. I mentioned doing this to my rock in my 180 and you have thought I was the anti Christ.
I've got 270 pounds of rock soaking right now using the bleach method.
Baking soda works really well as a declorinator as well...

Also wanted to post the method I and a few others use...
soak rock in 50/50 bleach water mixture for 3 days. Drain and rinse really well to get the gunk off.
Soak in regular fresh water for 3 days, drain.
Soak in RO water and baking soda for 3 days. rinse in RO water. I use about 2 pounds of baking soda for every 10 gallons of water.
Let air dry until rock is COMPLETLY dry. It's a good idea when air drying to flip the rock daily to make sure no water remains in the pockets in the rock. Once the rock is completly dry it's good base rock.

Yeah sometimes the old ways things were done really do work.

theres only 2 rocks that have some vegtative growing out of it. the rocks have been soaking in saltwater with a powerhead, but i might go with the bleach method. i know several offered many methods, but for the meeting of the minds, with using a 5 gallon bucket, wuts my best method for this. also wen sitting in bleach, should i use a powerhead or no.

Your method is great KOgle
Bleach is a great because it kills everything and contains chlorine, a main component of saltwater. so while it should be washed well like you describe, any bleach that does remain wont harm the tank. Bleach is great for cleaning old tanks before starting them back up too.

Since your vegetation sounds pretty tough (survived boiling and baking), I would opt for KOgl's method (50/50 mix). Since you goal is to kill everything on the rock, there is no reason to run a powerhead. Just mix it up and let the rock sit.

did a 5 gallon water change on my FT. and took a medium piece of live rock, and now the newly cleaned rock is being cycled in 2 year established water with aged live rock and a powerhead. cycle shouldnt be long at all.....
