Upgrade to 100 gal need help

Ok so I'm upgrading to a 100 gal I built a custom stand and have plans to use a old 40 gal breeder for the refugium. I have a few ?s first off can the returns be in the bottom front of the tank blowning to the back and middle was thinking like 45° angles or

do they have to come from the top. I also plan on using 1 inch pvc for plumbing I am open to any and all recommendations and ideas

Most tanks have tempered glass bottoms so they can't be drilled otherwise it doesn't matter where the return is. You do want good flow causing turbulence on the surface which a low return won't give you. The other problem which is much more important would be if you lost power to the tank or the return pump failed the tank would drain down to the return line level and your sump would overflow. Some use check valves but they fail frequently because they stick or critters get in them.

Pond pumps are not made for use in the harsh salt water environment. Metal parts will corrode and add metal toxins into the tank.
I have heard some of the Jaebo return pumps are pretty good. I use a Rio. Not the best pump but it does the job until I decide on different one.

For the sump/refugium, I use a 23watt flourescent bulb from the hardware store and a cheap clamp on fixture from the same hardware store $15 max for both. I use an inexpensive timer to turn it on and off so it is on when the tank lights are off. Helps prevent pH drops at night.

For the tank it depends entirely on what you want to keep in the tank and how much you want to spend. I use Kessils supplemented with T5s on all my tanks. They are kind of spendy but I love them. HO T5 flourescents are probably one of the cheapest for initial cost. You can get a fairly inexpensive fixture (mine are oddysea that I bought on eBay for $35 each). They came with crappy light bulbs which I replaced with ATI bulbs. With flourescent there is an ongoing cost of bulb replacement every 9-12 months. I love LEDs but you have to be very careful about what you buy. There are some made by Marineland and other recognizable brands that claim they are reef capable but in reality they are pretty much crap, and there are sorme really great LED products but they are expensive, Kessils, RAdions, AI Prime, Maxspec and a bunch of others. Do your research before you buy or you may end up a very expensive fixture that sits in your closet collecting dust because it doesn't do what you want it to do.

Ok I have a AI Prime on my aquapod and I love it but it's a little nuts to buy 4 to use on my 100 gal tank I was planning on using leds and t5s

Kessil makes a very nice led. Cheap, no but very nice. As mentioned above it really depends what u want to keep. I myself iam looking for lights on my new tank. I'am leaning towards led bc of the overall savings in running cost. The upfront cost is higher tho.

Thats out of my wheel house lol. I'am lucky if I can figure out the light output of them. The ones I've most recently seen are finnex. Trying to see if there any good

You could probably do 3 of the mid sized at 400 each. Still a big chunk of change. That is why I run the T5s too. Changing 2 bulbs once a year isn't too big of an expense compared to another 400 up front. Eventually I'll probably still get another kessil just not for a while.
