So one of my friends is looking to upgrade his tank to a reef tank on two of his tanks. the larger tank has a blue faced angel and a large tang not sure which type. I just went over to see his tanks today just expecting to advise him on how to get rid of some red slime but now he says he wants to get a reef tank going. So i looked over what hes got and basically hes got everything but the lights which are currently PCs.
So i currently have a 90 gallon reef tank thats thriving using two 250 watt DE PFO pendents running on a dual 250 watt HQI ballast. So i figured i would work off the same configuration for him but turns out PFO is no longer in business apparently.
So finally im wondering what are some of the better systems out there now since i havent kept up to date with lighting since upgrading my own system. My friend said money is most likely not a problem.

your post will soon get edited for the 'competitors' name, fyi. i'm assuming by ballast you mean reflector? for a 90 gallon i would think that 2 X 150 watt or 2 X 250 watt hqi's would do just fine if you are going to go MH. it has come to my attention through a lot of reading and seminars that we as hobbyists tend to way over light our tanks (myself included for sure). i have a buddy in my reef club that has a sick 120 with 4 VHO bulbs over it and has outstanding growth and color to his sps. he has a birdsnest the size of a basketball. i would probably do 250's myself, but again, you could get away with a lot less if you do it right.

ahh ok thanks... i gotta look into the ballasts now. Im definitely set on the 250W's because i have them over my 90 and love them. The problem is that i had PFO's and from what i understand that company is no longer. So i also actually had no idea there were different plugs. Thanks for pointing that out, have to look into new ballasts now. Thanks. O and also i was looking for the size of the ballasts because i couldnt find the size of those, i had found the size of the pendants.
