I have a fluval 404 running on a 68 gallon reef , with a prizm Protein skimmer,130 lb's live rock,2 402 pw's,2 1/2 inch sandbed.
I have no wet dry filter, is the fluval useless besides for water movement, I am only running two pads inside, and whatever came with the filter, my tank has been running for 1 year, and besides the little bits of hair algae it is doing fine.
should I take out the fluval? or maybe run a bio wheel?
thankx

Hey hey, hey!! I have a Fluval 303 which I use for water polishing with carbon and chemipure. I love it. It seems to work great. The only issue I have with it is the fact that you have to prime it, and also that damn O-ring is a pain. But overall, I like my Fluval.

It is fine for water movement, mechanical filtration and for running carbon. I don't see a problem with it. Definitely don't bother with a biowheel. With the amount of LR you have, you don't need to use the biomedia or a biowheel, but keep the sponges clean (so that they don't become ammonia problems).

I think fluval's work really well for polishing off the water. I run bio beads, phosguard, and purigen (experimenting with it) and I don't see a reason why to take it off.

I clean my sponges every 2 weeks and change the carbon once a month. I rince them in the water change water.

I'm still using my fluval 404 (for running carbon). IMO they do require regular cleaning. The last time I change out the carbon I removed the sponges... so now there is nothing in there other than three trays of carbon.
