Using a PUR water filter?

Any thoughts on using tap water filtered though a PUR water filter? It claims to reduce lead, mercury, lindane, atrazine, benzene, asbestos, sediment, chlorine, trihalomethanes, and removes microbiological cysts (cryptosporidium & giardia). I just happen to have an unused one laying around, so thought perhaps I could make use of it!

you know, I think that is a very good question... someone posted about this a few days ago... I asked if anyone has tested the TDS form this type water... no replies... if you know anyone with a TDS meter or an appropriate Ohm meter.. test it out ...
or maybe someone will see this that has tested it and can give us a firsthand educated answer

this frustrates me every time this comes up... many people say "no" but I have never heard any data to back them up!!! not even..."I tried it and xyz happened"
Im gonna try to get my TDS meter to someones house that uses one of these PUR filters and test it..

I do not know about Pur filters, but I thought about using Brita filters. The only drawback I could see is that the $10 cartridge will only purify 30 gallons of water. This could get expensive over time. RO units are not that expensive and would be more economical in the long run.

A long time ago I look into the PUR water filter (even used it for a while), it will "reduce" the mount of a lot of things but it will not "remove" it. Also, if I remember right they do not reduce or remove silicates or phosphates.
Get a RO/DI filter. They will "remove" the elements from the tap water... and as said they are not that expensive, especially when you compare the operation costs of RO/DIs VS other types of filters.

Its nothing but a carbon filter, you can run that in many ways on your own tank.

I borrowed a TDS meter from a friend and did a test... The PUR filter reduced the READING from 282 to 267. WOO HOO!!
I'm going to purchase an RO/DI unit tonight....:happyfish
