Using additives: Purple Up.

How do you guys feel about the use of additives. Specifically one called "Purple Up" to help coraline growth.
Info on it:
* Bring out the vibrant colors in your live rock
* Won't encourage growth of nuisance algae
* One bottle of Purple Up replaces multi-product recipes for coralline algae
Accelerates desirable pink and purple coralline algae growth. Unique, single-bottle formulation immediately raises dissolved calcium levels and targets live rock surfaces. Replenishes iodine levels and won't encourage nuisance algae growth. Use 5 ml (1 capful) per 50 gallons once daily. 16 oz.
I was thinking of getting this to help my live rock to really grow its algae up.

water changes and lighting are good but if ure not suppplementing the ca+ and replacing whats used up by the inverts waterchanges and lighting wont do much. purpleup is just ca+ carbonate and it works but youll get the same results keeping your water pram's in sinc keep ca+ like 350-400. and ph 8.1/2 and youll get coraline. if you have some all ready purple up has no "coraline" seeds if you will.

This product fails for one reason and that is Iodide is used up rapidly and Calcium is used up at a much slower rate. So if you try to supplement calcium & iodide with Purple Up the iodide will be low when you max your calcium number. If you choose, you would need to test both calcium & iodide and supplement separately.
Something to think about
: In my 50 reef my iodide would go undetectable in a weeks time.

I have used this and occasionally still do. I really only use it when I'm adding cured rock to an established tank and I want to boost the coralline growth on the new rock. I NEVER use the recommended dosage. I only use about a third of what it recommends and I don't dose everyday either. It's fine for a boost occasionally, but if you use it all the time, you will have major issues on your hands. If you're looking for calcium supplements, two parts are the way to go and everyone has their favorite brand (I prefer Brightwells). Sometimes water changes are not enough to boost coralline, sometimes they are. It can depend on the demands of your tank.

My tank has nothing but Fiji and Dominican live rock, Along with crabs, snails, shrimp, a Brush plant, and a Jakarta yellow Leather I got accidentally. My fiji rock has spots where the red algae is turning brown and I hope to reverse that.

Well, since you don't have a ton of coral or fish or expensive inverts (please correct me if I'm wrong), now would be the time to try it if you really wanted to. Just get a small bottle. I do use it, but like I said, DO NOT DO THE RECOMMENDED DOSAGE, do much less. Test your water at least once every other day for two weeks and see how things are. Honestly, when I was new to the hobby, I used this stuff every day at the recommended dosage and didn't have any issues but I also do weekly water changes.

If I were to make a wild guess I would say algae is growing over the coralline. Give us a pic and your water test numbers…
