Using Ocean water

I live here in South Florida and since I have a boat I was thinking of going out to the gulf stream and getting some water for my change. Do you guys think this is a good idea? The water out there is crystal clear and I was going to try to try to get 10 gals today just to try. BTW I have a 125 reef. Thanks Joe

There was a similar thread posted not to long ago and it really did shed any light on a clear yes/no answer. Many locals where I live use ocean water which they filter before adding. I just dont know if it is worth the risk. Let use know how it works out for you.

I have been doing some research on other sites and I think its strange that we try so hard to replicate natural sea water but when asked about it everybody thinks its taboo
. I am pretty sure that 10 miles off shore the water is pretty clean and since there are reefs all ofer the place here in South Florida. I guess I will give it a try and let you all know what happens

As long as you don't collect near oil rigs or close to the shore (~10mi) then I think you should be fine.
To filter, Just try to run it through some coffe filter media. SHould be good to go!

If I were you I'd get natural ocean water instead of mixing my own. I also collect my own water here off the coast of CA. I use natural ocean water I collect myself and I mix my own water when I run out of natural ocean water.

I used it during my initial fill near the coast of central CA and I am pretty sure it was the leading reason to my quick cycle since all my live rock was dead anyways.
