but actually all you have to do is partition the tank into a reef/fish area and a smaller macro algae area.
for instance I just added a $10 egg crate 3" in front of the back glass on my 55g. then added 2 2 tube 4" utility fixtures 6" behing the tank pointing forward. ($30 with 6500k tubes) nitrates dropped to unmeasureable if 3 weeks and phosphates to unmeasureable a month or so after that.
I grew caulerpas and cheato between the glass and eggcrate and pods thrived in that protected area.
My yellow tang was constantely grasing on the macros that poked through the eggcrate.
You could do in cheaper and definately with a seperate sump/refugium and the like.
But actually is was the best thing and also one of the cheapist I did for that tank.

That's definitely a great idea for tanks in fish rooms; etc... but how would eggcrate look in a dt in someone's living room?
That's the only thought that really comes to my mind; otherwise it's wonderful.

Guess it depends. If the living room has to be free of all than then you right.
But to me I like seeing all the macros ans stuff especially behind everything else.
