I have had my UV since i had my tank, which was 9 months so far. ..But i have heard that they are not good for reefs. Is there a reason why? does it kill things neccesary for reefs?
Thanks

I believe they kill live plankton and pods and probablya million other benificial organisms.

Bah. :D Most reefs I've seen run UV. I run it 24/7. My pods/coraline algae/etc thrive, my water is crystal clear, and I haven't had a disease outbreak since. I have never seen someone put one on their reef tank and then complain about it after. Even many of the dedicated SPS, etc tanks in the book by Paletta, "Ultimate Marine Aquariums" run UV 24/7. If you have it, use it. It's not NEEDED, but I definitely think it's an asset, not a liability.
That being said, a UV is NOT a substitute for a QT tank. One should always still use a QT.

I think we've been here before
I don't recall ever seeing a full blow reef with a UV...in person that is...

Whats the release date on that book? Without mentioning any names. I did talk to two guys who are mentioned in one or two of Palletta's most recent books. They must be the only two in the books who don't run UV's

Yes, this issue sounds familiar, Mark. :D There ARE tanks in his book that don't use UV, but there are MANY that do. Is it needed? No. Is it an asset? I think so. I do agree that it's not as common on reef tanks because of theories which I, and apparently others, think are bunk (UV kills pods, coraline, etc). I, and others, run UV 24/7 and my pods/coraline spread like crazy. You can't argue with success. I said it before, and I'll say it again:
I have yet to see a thread/post by someone that has added a UV onto their reef and saw negative effects afterward.

I'll have to get back to you on that. I believe it's 2001/2002.

so that means the info probably from the late 90's
(edit) NOOOOT, I don't know why I was thinking 2001....I'm late 2001 is when that info came in.

Thanks for all the info! :)

It posts dates on when the tank pics/interviews were taken. Some are from the late 90's, others are from as late as 2003.

I was in _ _ house in either 00 or 01, he was talking about getting the info and pictures ready for Palletta's new book. Maybe a bud light will jog my memory, so how I doubt it:notsure:

This is a subject that you are just going to have to agree to disagree. There are many reefs that I would consider "full blown" that use UV, Steve Weast's tank comes to mind. There are very many others that don't. Either way you can be very successful.

i was just cruising through the photo forum and saw that steve weast has a 160 W uv on his system. i don't know how often he runs it. but that is only one example.
