UV Sterilizer Necessay??

Just purchased a UV sterilizer for my 55 gal. tank....I was told its a good addition for the tank......I am 6 months into this hobby and have had some bumps and bruises along the way.....I am totally hooked, I do not want to but more equipment just for the sake of buying it!!! Is this a good peice of equipment to have for my system......thanks...

I bought one after I lost my fish to ich. It gave me a little more peace of mind knowing that the sterolizer would kill ich. Just remember you have to run the water past the light at a slow speed for it to be effective and it will only kill ich in the free floating form. It will also kill some beneficial bateria in your tank. Mine broke a couple of years ago and I haven't gotten another one. Personally, I would just use a QT tank now, but still many others like having them. Good luck with your tank!
