Nope. You think it would be bad for reef tanks, but it apparently isn't. Almost all the dedicated SPS and coral reef tanks in Paletta's book "Ultimate Marine Aquariums" which focus on the most spectacular personal tanks in the country, run UV. There are also several reefers on this forum and others that run UV and love it - I have yet to see someone say it has had a negative effect on the health of their reef.

UV's were used back in the 90s along with Ozone and other fun stuff. Probably when that books pictures and info was collected. They are generally not used anymore......I'm sure some of the old guys who used em them still use em now.
I'll be talking to two guys tomorrow that are in Paletta's last book (which ever one that is) I'll have to see what they have to say.
I only know one person who use a UV on his reef but let me guess, Not only does EVERY SINGLE reef tank you've ever seen run "filter socks" they also run UV's, right?
