UV Sterilizer

Does anyone use a UV Sterilizer ? If so what are the advantages. Does it help with ICK, algae?

Since I have started with using the double helix 36watts UV lights, the tank has very minimal algae growth, plus my blue regal tank and juv. emperor angel don't have any ick, the tank is very healthy even though I have not had a water change yet at this point (5.5 months and counting). I do use RO water to top up every three days, amounts to 5 gallons per week or so.

If I understand the uv cut back on algae growth and helps prevent ICK. I understand it also cuts back on planktom....but with good skimming ....there is not much to cut back on if I read everything correctly. Anyone know if this is true...I do have fetherdusters...clams...other filter feeders....
