UV

Hey there,
Question for the group, I recently went through a bout with ich that killed off the majority of my fish. I have since treated with "KickIch" and have saved the remaining ones. I do have shrimp and crabs so I didnt use copper and dont have a hospital tank. I have a fish only setup with a wetdry, skimmer, and a 8 watt hang on the back uv.....
I've been told I need a 25 watt inline UV to keep the parasites away. Any suggestions on where to go with this?
Also, I always thought that with inline uv your water is traveling through at to fast a rate of speed?

8 watts isn't very powerful.I can't remember how big your tank is, but that UV wouldnt work over 30gallons,I think. The flow rate is dependant on the size pump you use. Get a small pump, say 75gph or smaller, and it will work fine. Remember, a UV system will not garentee you wont have another outbreak,But it greatly reduces the risk. STEVE

My tanks is 75 gal. What would you suggest for an inline uv (brand, watt, etc.) also I am assuming that I would splice it into the return from my pump back into the tank or would you use a seperate pump and have two returns

If you ran it separate, like you mentioned,it would throw your flow ballance off. I would just loop it out, then back into the sump.... Just my opinion. STEVE

I am presently running an 8-watt uv with an independent pump. According to the product specifications, it's good for a tank up to 125 gallons. In order for it to work well, it MUST have the water flowing through it at no more than 150 gllns/hr (this of course according to the manufacturer). About three days after I began operating mine, my water became almost crystal clear. Thus far, I'm really happy with the results.
