Valuable clowns?

How do you know when a clown is valuable? Like those black onyx clowns for example, are those a real breed or are they made up to promote sale? My LFS has a pair of black clowns that they say are ocellaris, they are asking $300 for the pair. I see black and whites all the time, why are these different??

I wouldn't pay $300 for any pair of clown no matter how rare they are. Way too expensive. Maybe when I am more experienced so they won't die so easily, but not now. The ones your LFS has may be a mated pair of black and white ocellaris clowns, they do get expensive, but not that much. $150 tops.
Black onyx percula clowns are of the genus and species Amphiprion percula, just like the regular perculas, but they have a unique color morph and only found in Papa New Guinea I believe.

Yes, those are the black onyxe perculas. Illegal link by the way. Don't like to sites that sell aquarium stuff.

Sorry Viper, I didn't read that first... How do you know when you see one?? What distinguishes it from any other black/white??

Cincyreefers clowns are actually the black onyx perculas. He got mixed up because of the place he bought it at.
How do you know when you see what? A black/white ocellaris, black onyx percula, or a mated pair?
Black/white ocellaris clowns are all black with the 3 normal white stripes with very very little or no orange at all.
A mated pair would spawn every 2 weeks, so that's how you know if they are.
And black onyx perculas can be told apart from the regular perculas because the body is nearly completely covered with black (with the white stripes) except for the fins on the adults. Here is a pic of another one of cincyreefer's beautiful black onyx clowns. The black covers the whole body except for the fins and white stripes.

Wow, I didn't know... The ones at the LFS are all black, rather dark brown with of course the white stripes, and the tip of it's face is orange. He tried to tell me that they are rare because they are not found in the ocean. That a clown breeder will take out the darkest clowns and keep breeding til they get a black one. Well, at least I had the sence to check here first, and not just buy them.

Those are either Black Ocellaris or Melanopus Clownfish.
I would gladly pay $200 for a verified Breeding pair of Onyx.
What would you pay for a bonded pair of these?

But I am not gonna answer that, for fear that it might incriminate me, LOL. Don't tell me...Are those the ones you sell for $15 apiece??
