Varnishing hood??

I got my new 40 gal tank up and running last weekend, but the hood is just stained pine. Can I varnish the inside of it to stop it becoming waterlogged, without poisoning the tank? I was planning on using a pressure pack of marine grade varnish I have here. The hood gets very damp on the inside due to evaporation, which can't be good....

I made my DIY hood. I stained it and put a polyurathane coat on my hood and stand.. It looks good. The chemicals are not in the water so it will not pollute the tank.

Cool, I didn't think there would be a problem, as long as I left it for long enough for the varnish to fully cure, just the girl at the paint shop told me she had probs with varnishing some wood around a pond, just got me thinking that maybe the water that evaporates might drip back into the tank, taking chemicals with it. I didn't think that would happen, she just made me nervous, that's all lol
