I have a 90 gallon tank with 440w VHO and 158w T5. I have 2 flase clowns, 2 green chromis, 1 copperband butterfly, and 1 firefish. The lights are on for about 8 hours/day. I dose the home made low ph formula of calcium/alk.
Here is the interesting part. When the lights come on..I have red algae on the sand. Over the course of the day, it recedes. Then it seems to grow back again with the lights off.
Any ideas on the cause or a solution? Should I be running the lights longer than 8 hours/day?

Do a search for cyanobacteria aka red slime. Great info on ways to battle it basically manually siphioning it out, increasing flow, and water changes. What is your flow rate and could you post your parameters?
