I have used live rock in QTs during hypo, and, yes, some die off occurs but the rock also may help out with keeping the uncycled QT cycled. Difficult call since there will be some die off that could actually increase ammonia. I've always had good luck using it, however, though my QT was always cycled for new, incoming fish.
