I've got an ARO electronic VHO ballast that will run up to 4 bulbs. I think generally people use 4 4' bulbs on these. I've got a 6' tank. Is there any reason I can't use 4 3' bulbs? I was thinking of running them end to end. The ballast will handle up to 440 watts and 16 ft of bulbs. This would only be 360 watts and 12 ft of bulbs. The reason I'm wanting to do it this way is because I've got another electronic ballast up there already that is running 2 4' bulbs and I don't have enough space to put 6 4' bulbs across the top but I would have space for 6 bulbs if I do it this way.
