very very stuffy daughter looking for some relief... is it ok to use vicks near her, not on her, to help unclog her so she can sleep?

go to the smallest bathroom you have and blast the hot water with the door closed and steam her real good - if you have a humidifier vicks makes a vaposteam product that works real good

I am with Jenny. Do you have the humidifier that you can dose with vicks steam.
If not, (won't help you now but..) Vicks make these tablets that you place on your shower floor and run the hot water. We love them. A friend of mine breaks them up and runs them in the kitchen sink and puts her small child over the steam coming up from the water.
good luck, nothing worse than a baby with a stuffy nose! And even worse if she has a passy..

i actually just read a study on the use of vicks on children under the age of two. the results suggested that vicks vaporub actually produced MORE mucous in this test, compounding existing problems. vicks does make a product called vapomist as already noted. i'd just use the hot shower in a small bathroom technique. however, i'm sure i speak for the majority: my grandmother rubbed vicks on me for years, and look how i turned out (twitch twitch)

I use the humidifier with vicks and it works really well in an enclosed room. I run it at night. Steam, in general,is good for breaking up trapped mucus. The goal is to get her to cough anything that could be in her chest. If she has a lot of mucus in her nostrils you could use the bulb to remove it and that can also help alleviate any breathing issues with a clogged nose. Might not like that much though. My daughter always fought me on this one but she breathed better afterwards. HTH!
Hope she's feeling better soon...

We use vapor rub on our 13 month old every now and then, and it does wonders. We haven't had any excess mucus as a result (which someone stated earlier), and she has slept through the night when we've used it. In my experience it's a miracle elixir. We've had no negative effects to use.
We regularly suck out her nose though.

They also have those vapo things you can plug in, not sure if the brand is Vick's, but they work great.

I'm a day late, but vicks makes a "baby" version. I used that and the plug in thing that is also made by vicks. Both work really well.

well, i fried her humidifier...
i didn't have the water distributor (for lack of better description) on tight enough, and a gallon of water went all over it and the floor (of course, it was running and i had the baby in my arms) before i could unplug the humidifier and stop the spillage.
i'm going to talk to the pediatrician about the vicks humidifier.
as for the bulb (we call it a snuffler for some odd reason) we have those and a battery powered one. the pediatrician suggested only snuffling once or twice a day since it can ruin their blood vessels in the nose.
we've put a ton of saline drops in her nose (well not a ton) and that helps the most. makes her sneeze a lot of mucus which she likes to try to lick before we can clean it off....

Get the plug in thing. It looks like one of those glade plug in things except it is not an air freshener it releases the vicks vapor in the air. Less expensive, and just as effective. I got mine at Target next to all of the Vicks products.
Great info about the bulb. I think I might have over done it a few times!

K....after 4 kids I did not know there was a battery operated nose sucky thing....gross....
How can "snuffling" (cute word by the way :) ruin the blood vessels?

it causes too much suction if they are really blocked up. my blood vessels in my nose are really close to the surface and i get bloody noses all the time.
the battery operated snuffler even sings songs :)
last night was horrible. she's of course teething... put in two tablets at 7 right before bed, 745 she was screaming bloody murder, arching her back in pain, etc. she ended up sleeping in bed with us because she just wouldn't stop going nuts when she was laid down, although she was fine sleeping up on our shoulders. she tossed and turned but slept 90% of the night through.
she's got a dr's appointment to check for an ear infection at 4pm today.

Poor little girl! I know when I'm congested I have to prop my head up to sleep. Maybe that is her problem. I've had those nights with Noah. I know how hard it is to see your little one sick. They are so helpless and sad when they don't feel good. I hope she feels better soon!

Saline and suction (avoid hitting the sides of the nose to prevent trauma to the blood vessels ( Kesselbach's Plexus). 4-6 times a day should not over do it.
Humidifier ( I like the cool mist or Ultrasonic)
I'd avoid Vicks or any other meds in those under 2. They do not work well, and have been showing some nasty side effects.
Time, I'm still working on the cure for the common cold. I want to buy out Bill, and Labron.

pedi said same thing, no vicks.
but still says only 1 or 2 times on the snuffler, but as much saline as we can pump into her nose (hehe jk)

Dude, i don't know why these people are getting so technical. My son was 9 months old the first time he got stuffy like that and we got a vaporizer to put in his room by his crib while he slept and rubbed a little bit of vapor rub on his chest and it really helped to clear him up. He's 18 months now and has gotten stuffy like that one time since and we did the same thing. Just buy a vicks vaporizer and rub a little vicks on the chest. It doesn't produce more mucus, it just loosens it so it can be expelled more quickly.
