Well I believe I have a article somewhere around here that talked about the two biggest brands out there.. I believe it was that geforce and nvidea (I dont know the spelling on them). Apparently the one that people thought was the best actually was NOT. They showed the same game on both cards and the less popular one showed much better detail.
I know that doesnt help you much... but i'll try to find that article if I can.

i got the geforce 6800 and i unlocked some of its pipelines and pixel shaders to make it more like the 6800 gt. great card for the money.. allows me to play just about every game out there with the graphics maxed. costs about 200 bucks and i feel its worth the money

How do you "unlock" the pipelines/pixil shaders? I keep reading about that, but how do you do it, and exactly what is it?

There are several tricks to doing this Beth. Some involve just flashing the firmware on some cards.....Others invlove actual hardware manipulation.
As for a Low End card, Go for at minimum a nVidia 6600GT or ATI 9600XT.
Anything less than that is uselss for todays apps.

LOL, Sorry. Didn't mean to lose you there. ;)
Firmware is the software embedded into the video card that tells it what to do. Each manufacturer has programs that will update/change this software to newer versions.
These same programs can be used to flash an incorrect firmware to some cards (ie: One made for a faster model from the same maker) forcing them to run at the faster speeds.
This is VERY risking and can destroy the card so I don't recommend it unless you have money to burn and know a bit about computer hardware. Need I add that I do NOT do this to my own.
Others require soldering on the card itself. Never fun and always voids any warranty and can kill the card.

And where's the link to the first part of that article?
So, basically unless you're a geek and a

[hr]
gamer [both] don't do it, right?
