gotcha, and you say they will not add a bioload to the tank or cause any bad water quality, they will actually lower nitrates?

the clams will consume nitrates

Is this an Ancient Chinese Secret? Nice tip, never heard of such a thing.
I would have assumed they would be dead or dying and would actually add to the Nitrates.

After seeing this yesterday I picked up a couple clams from the grocery store and stuck in my tank. Now to just wait and see if my puffer eats them.

Yes, they sell the clams alive.
Just like oysters. If they're tightly closed, they're live & safe. If even a little open, don't buy them. The ice keeps them in an almost dormant state.

in my old tank i used to stop at the local seafood store and ask him for a oyster or a clam and i would throw it in the tank and the puffers would go crazy for it(and very good for their teeth)

Ya the 2 clams I bought are still in my tank with their little tongues sticking out, which I assume is normal and how they get food. I haven't seen my Puffer show any interest in them yet. The Clams were tightly closed when I got them and only opened after I put them in some of my water to burp and then transferred to the tank. Another thread I read in the reef forum said they're filter feeders and can help reduce nitrates. If true, in combination with my sugar dosing, I have a ridiculous amount of Nitrate reduction in my tank going on.

If you have a local raw bar/sports bar that carries steamers (clams), they should be able to sell you some. Of course they will be at a premium $$. Or you can just order them from this site.

after reading this, I went to my local grocery store. They had clams for 69cents each. They're huge, about 2.5-3 inches each. I acclimated them for about 20 minutes (floated). Then dropped them in. One in my sump, other in the DT. The one in the sump seems to be doing well. The one in the DT started burying itself in the sand, but only got about half way. Today, I looked in there and a large chunk of it's shell is missing. I think my zebra eel took a crack at it.

Gorgeous eel and nice video. Kind of reminds me of that Americas Funniest Home Video where the cat gets its head stuck in a paper bag. Nice tank too

Awsome Video! Thank you. Would this be recommended for a SFE? Also, I want to keep more of a community tank. Does this make the eel more aggressive?
