King Neptune, I believe your still putting your tank together, so if your trying to remove some stubborn crud, vinegar and water works pretty good as a glass cleaner. (1/2 cup vinegar to 1/2 gallon water in a clean spray bottle)
After a tank is running, and your trying to keep the outside clean (IMO, this is much more difficult than keeping th inside clean on a saltwater tank) I'm with Florida Joe. Plain water is best. I wipe it on with a clean paper towel, and remove it, streak free, with a $2 squeegee I got a the drugstore.

nitschke65 spot on, vinegar for cleaning of tank during set up. Let it soak on tough spots. After set up then just h20 IMO use R/O no impurities that is what makes streaks and spots. Then a clean cloth/papertowel anything to dry.
Love the squeege, off to the store.
This place is a major think tank! If we put have the effort into our day jobs as we do are tanks can you imagine.

Newspapers are my favorite as well. Rough enough to scrape off gunk. Doesn't leave streaks. Worked in Boot Camp, works as a civilian. Beats any paper towel, sponge, or rag hands down.

Just curious. I know that windex or similar type cleaner is a no-no inside the tank and around stuff that come in contact with the water but what is wrong with using a windex sprayed paper towel to clean the outside of the tank with? It doesnt come in contact with any of the water so shouldnt it be fine?

You can get windex that is made with vinegar which I would assume is a little safer than the stuff made with ammonia but either way if you spray it on the towel away from your tank you should be fine, the danger comes from getting the overspray into the tank water.
I also will be adding the squeege to my list of tools.

vinegar is to dissolve calcium deposits. doesn't matter what surface (glass, plastic, whatever). its like parts cleaner but for car parts except for aquariums
