about two months ago i think i picked-up a computer virus. don't know how but when i turned the computer on i lost everything, but i didn't. I checked the memory that was being used and nothing changed (around 18 gigs on a 60 gig hard drive). all the programs are there but unaccessable (my computer, c: drive, programs) and all my files are missing. i have the desktop with the recycling bin, click on the start menu and there is nothing.
i tried to reload windows, but it is still doing the same thing. anyone have any ideas on how to get rid of it. i was thinking about trying to erase the computer(windows and everything) and starting all over again. :help: :help:

sounds like it played with your registry....
I would try these steps in this order
reset bios
format
Reinstall windows
(im just saying go straight to format since you cant acess any programs on your computer...chances are you wont be able to use an antivirus program)

i have already tried to reinstall windows. I would wipe out the whole hard drive and start all over again but i don't have the boot disk that came with the computer so i don't have any of the drivers for the hardware. the only thing i can think of is trying to wipe out everything and hoping that XP will find all the drivers. :help:

try a "system restore" that will take your computer back to a previous date. BUT you will loose any thing stored after the date you restore from.

Trade ya problems,
I was setting up our desk top with the internet connect, when it tryed to dial out, I kept getting an error message that there was not a modem installed, well I know that is not true, because I have used it in the past, just not lately,(getting ready to take some coarses online so I wanted to be able to use my desktop with the printer), well after going to the website and updating driver, all the info is telling me that the modem is bad, this sucks. My flat screen monitor just went up too..... This SUCKS! Lisa

I work with computers all day, so this would be my recomendation. It sounds like you have gotten a registry virus as suggested before. At first I thought maybe your hard-drive just crashed but you are able to boot up so this isnt the case. Doing a reg-edit on your computer would not be recommended either unless you have the exact script of what to take out. Messing with the registry can be fatal to you whole system, as also flashing your bios. If you take out one extra period needed for the OS your system will never boot again. My suggestion to you is buy a wipe program and go through the walk through process of writing zeros to the drive, to be on the safe side wipe the disk clean 3 times in a row, this will hopefully wipe everything clean, including viruses embedded into the drive. next try to reload your OS (windows xp) with a clean install meaning from scratch, formatting, loading, etc. Hopefully this will work and you will regain access to your computer. But at a last resort if this doesnt work then you will have to go purchase a new hard-drive, format it and install you OS. Once you get your computer working again, I would also suggest setting up, a anti-virus program, a firewall, spy-ware remover, spam-blocker, ad-ware remover, (all of these are free from downloads.com) except the anti-virus software. the firewall being the best protection ( I suggest zone alarm). All these tools will not prevent all viruses from your computer but it will certainly help out alot more. Viruses are what keep people in business, without them there would be no need for those expense tools (thats why i suggest the free ones). They are a pain, and I know what you are going through, Ive had them crash my hard-drive and had to start from stratch, also. hope this helps

just when you think you know everything about computers they come out with something new
