Defense. Something spooked him IMO.

Vlamingi tangs are like that. We have one in the 125 reef tank at work. When customers walk by or look into the tank to look at the corals, he'll run to his hole and get really dark almost black and get light color splotches. After a little while, he'll go back to his normal color. Just like hot said above, something definately spooked him. He should be fine though. Here's a couple pictures of this mooch. He's tripled in size in the last 8 months, now he is close to 7 or 8"!

I love the vlamingi at work, but he's kind of annoying because whenever he sees me, he wants to be fed. When customers come in, he goes and hides and changes colors. But when they leave he comes right back out again begging for food. He's an awesome guy. I love him, even though he's not really mine. I don't know how old they are when they get their adult colors, but I know they can get pretty big.
