id say a 55g is ok simply because yes they do swim but they are not the most active of fish and as long as its the only bottom fish then there shouldnt be too many issues IMO!

everyone has their own opinions, but sometimes people make excuses in this hobby to suite their wants, but this hobby is about the animals we keep as well. we need to respect their needs, and just because they can survive doesnt mean their happy. Use ur best judgement and if u can do a bigger tank than i suggest it.

i dont think im making excuses... i honestly think one could be very happy they grow very slowly and i had one in a 55 for a while after it was full grown though it was the only thing in there it was very happy and had plenty of room when it needed it!

Just to be safe around here I will say that this was my experience, I am in no way suggesting that anyone else would have this experience.

I raised one for 3 years in a 38 tall. He was killed by a visiting 2" Huma. He was 15" with a 18" finspan. They need a place to perch more than a place to swim. In the wild they spend most of their lives looking down at a 45 degree angle, holding as still as they can patiently waiting by that one hole where fish come through, and only swim a a few inches at a time to coral their prey. This is my humble opinion. As to whether he survived or thrived, that would be the opinion of the show judges who gave him his trophies. As to his apparant health at the time of his murder, I was offered $200 for his body for mounting and display purposes.

xDave I agree with you but even if that is true I still wouldn't put it ina 38 tall .. the smallest I would go and I believe he would be able to thrive would be a 55 tall .. but that may just be me

By the way, my avatar is his baby picture. At only 5" he took 2nd or 3rd (whichever red is) overall marine fish.

I first want to say to ams153 and Jam1e, im sorry if u took my words as personal attacks, not what i meant that you or any individual in this thread is doing this im simply stating that this happens quite often, many times have i wanted a specimen that would not fit, go into one of my aquariums. Its only MY opinion and i was giving it to fudukeford. take it or leave it.
As for the V.Lion, a 55g is 13" wide and a the lion is 15"-18", I think that ATLEAST the fish should have the option to turn around. May be happy while its small but this things get big and thick with long fins. I wouldnt suggest tryin it.

i deffinatly not doing a V.lion, its gonna either be a dwarf fuzzy, or zebra, i REALLY wanted a eel, or at least a eel type fish, but i dont want my fish to be unhappy so im most likley not going to get a SFE, and suggustions for a good tankmate or 2 or a dwarf lion, or are there any other eel like fish that are easy to keep (i dont want any pipefish or ribbon eels, too hard to keep)

What else do you plan on having in the tank, fedukeford? That will dictate your selection for tankmates.

i know ur not doing a V lion i was just putting that out there incase any newbie read this and thought it was "permission" to keep one in a 55g. You could ask in the fish forum, i think there is a blenny that grows to around 10" that looks like an eel that sounds like it would work but u would have to ask them as im not sure. As for tankmates do a dwarf then maybe a toby puffer? hamlet? you could do three around 4-5" if u have a good amount of rock and filtration. Maybe more but every one that u add you are risking yours tanks health so just check your levels as you go and use your best judgement. Have you bought your 55g yet? if not do a 75g and you could do a snowflake in my opinion. there not much more, $20? i got my 75g for $56 new and the 55g were $115!

o ya a convict blenny, ive already had 2 and they just dont do well in my tank... im converting my 55 reef to the aggressive tank so yes i already have the tank (all corals and most inverts are going into a new 125 reef !! still cycling) for filtration i have a fluval 404 and a amiracle mini quad skimmer (pump just blew so i need to find a new one), and ive got around 80 Lbs of live rock so i have pretty good filtration, i think ill do a dwarf zebra, blue spotted puffer, and mabey a longnose hawk, how does that list sound??
