I have a 75 gal. FONLR, Right now the only fish I have is a Volitan Lionfish. I went to the LFS today, to perhaps get him a new tankmate. However, the "intelligent" employees there could not tell me which fish were compatiable with him and I wasn't about to just chance it!! Anyone have any suggestions?? Also, I read on a couple online sites that lions like beefheart, so I bought some frozen BH at the LFS and he tore it up!! Is this ok for him to eat?? :p

How big is he now? He'll eventually outgrow the 75g. Good tankmates include eels, groupers, certain wrasses, large tangs, and planktonic triggers. Sometimes they will be ok with puffers and other triggers, but a lot of the times the trigger/puffer will nip his fins. They can also be kept with other lionfish of equal size. As for beefheart, I've never used it. The only lion I ever had took silversides, squid, krill, and shrimp with gusto. Bo

he is pretty small, bout 2 inches. what types of triggers are planktonic?? I gave beef heart a try cuz the only thing I could get him to eat was brine. He refuses krill and I refuse to use live feeders, I know they are bad news. I didn't try silversides yet. thanx.

If he's that small, I wouldn't add any trigger yet. But planktonic triggers include niger, pinktail, bluejaw, Hawaiin black, crosshatch, and sargassum to name a few. Bo

.... I think a few posts ago, someone wanted to put seahorses with one. ;) I wouldn't suggest it though.

I would have suggested a puffer with a lion but my puffer died last night and I think he was stung. He and the lion were buddies so I don't think it was intetional(sp) on pupose ( I use big words I can't spell:rolleyes: ) I do have a picasso trigger in with him and no probs yet, I think I will replace the puffer w/ another lion.

I have a Koran angel in with mine and they get along great. I also have a green bird wrasse, a dogface puffer and a scorpionfish as well.. everybody gets along well. I had a snowfalke eel in there but recently passed away. I think he got stung by the scorpion.

I have mine with a few sharks and a couple of others. He has killed a couple of sharks when I first put then in there. He has also stung everyone in the tank. If you look at my pics of the leopard you can see where he got him but all of them have survived. I plan on taking him out asap. He is getting way to big and feeding time is scary when the sharks start going crazy. I have no problems with him eating though, All I feed him is shrimp from the grocery store. Everyone seems to love it. I have a pic of him somewhere I will try to get posted. I would suggest an eel with him and maybe a grouper or puffer. You will need something that will stay away from him. Eels would probly be the best and with your tank size a SFE would be awsome. Good luck:D

the simple answer for what is a lionfish compatible tankmate is easy. If it fits into the mouth of the lion its food.
Essentially any fish equal to 1/2 the size of the lion maybe eaten.
Thats said other calm fish, like groupers, other lions (of equal size), small eels, large tangs, planktonic feeding triggers, butterflies, wrasses can do well.
