I'm involved with starting a new club up at the University of Washington and we are looking to volunteer as a group about once a month. Does anybody have any ideas? What have been you most fun/rewarding experiences volunteering?
Also, if anybody has any good fundrasing ideas I'd love to hear them.
Thanks all!

no good fund raising.. but my church group volunteers our time to adoption homes and we go have fun with all the kids, helps the place out, buy the kids birthday presents and Christmas presents.

you can volunteer at the red cross. I was going to do that, but I just don't have the time for the commitment they need. I know some people that really enjoy volunteering there.
habitat for humanity is wonderful and they are always looking for volunteers to help build houses for low income families.
you guys can do a blood drive at your school.

Red cross is a good idea. We already have a blood drive that comes to our school pretty often and the habitat for humanity list in seattle is so long that people have to wait years to actually do a project (it's really ridiculous actually!).
The adoption homes sounds really cool, do you have any clue how one would go about looking into that? Are you talking about a sort of modern day orphanage?

Not a Habitat for Humanity..We did one at fleet week in Fort Lauderdale, and it was like servitude..You could not feel good about what you were doing while the whip was cracking above you...

I had a bad experience w/an "old folks home" in highschool, but visiting to talk w/people sounds like a great idea.
Good to know about H for H, I say exnay on anything involving servitude!

I suggest you talk to a civics teacher from your school... I'm sure they would be more than happy to help you.
you can help out at a homeless shelter.
You can go help out at a hospital. I'm sure they will love to have people to entertain the kids there.

Saddest place ever is a retirement home. Those folks LOVE to see people, and they DONT CARE WHY your there. I have a buddy that I just bother about old cars and politics while we play chess a few times a month. They guy can remember the Great Depression, when Hitler invaded, he can remember when Hoover was president. I am a whacko history buff myself and to tell the truth I get more out of it than he does. But its definatly something worthy of your time. And it is always appreciated.

Anyone else?
Keep in mind, it's a bunch of college kids so group projects are good. We'd like something that we can all do together.
I really like the retirement home idea though, I keep thinking about my grandpa and how my grandma went to see him every day and after he died she would still go back to hang out w/other residents who didn't get visitors.

Visit kids in a children's hospital....especially the kids with a terminal disease.
Volunteer to bathe/feed/walk pets at the local shelter.
Go play cards with some people at retirement centers.
Help serve meals at a local 'soup kitchen'
Go as a group to donate blood.
Pick up trash along a popular roadway.
Spend a day helping Habitat for Humanity build a home
Join Big Brothers and Big Sisters and be a friend to a kid
Clean the yards of some retired folks who live alone

i do turtle rescue. the laws change here all the time, so most pet stores won't accept pet turtles. it's better i take them than release. it sucks when your state suddenly changes it's law and millions of parents decide the law must be right, lets dump off little johnny's pet before it kills him.
no funding yet athough i keep looking.
