VW Dan's 8 Gallon Tru Vu Thread

Whats up everyone, I have been 'lurking'
on this forum for some time and have been absorbing all the info......finally I have some pics to share. I got this tank about a year ago now, and have been keeping corals sucessfully for about 9 months now. Reading these forums have helped tremendously with my progress and have come through with info in beginning panic situations, to helping me make descisions with new purchases. I found myself coming on here to ask a question, but finding a discussion already up where somone had the same thing happen to them, and my questions were answered. Seeing all of the pictures of peoples new corals and such on here has me driving around on all free hours of whatever day from fish store to fish store to check for new arrivals to drain my wallet. Reading other's tank diaries had helped me make improvements on my own tank setup and maitenance routines to have sucess. So to all you who have posted before me, thank you!

My tank is a 8 gallon TruVu 'Hex?' front with the aquasystems filtration (built in spillover and filter). I started with a 32 watt Coralife fixture (2x18w 50/50 bulbs), and now have a GLO T5 HO 2x24w fixture with a 'marine glo' (blue)and a 'life glo' (10,000K?) bulb. I upgraded because one of the bulbs went out on the coralife fixture after about 4 months, and the light fixture itself was only 12 inches or so wide to my 22 inch wide tank. The GLO fixture is 24 inches and allowed me to cover the entire width of my tank, and gave me more well-lit areas to place corals. I definetely noticed more growth out of my corals once I made this lighing upgrade, and my pockets shrank much quicker because of all the newly well-lit-rock I had to cover with new frags.
Blah blah, I will post more info soon, I am going to see if I can figure out how to post some pics now. I will try to answer any questions too....Peace!
Here is an early shot with an old film camera.....

And a few months later with the old lighting, same bad camera...

more coming, this is to see if I can get pics to work....

ok that worked, so here is my tank about 6 or 7 months ago, but these pics are from an old film camera. It took me along time to finally switch over to digital, and I recently got my first digital camera - finally - for Christmas. I used to take the rolls of film and have them put them on a CD so I could upload to a coumputer. This got to be expensive, between buying film and developing, especially with aquarium shots, you can waste alot of film.... anyways here is the last of the old film shots...........
Flash -

a few months later....

first pics of clown hosting

and as of about two or three months ago, with the upgraded lighting, and modern technology. I also have learned by this point how to take better pics by reading the photography forums on here....

Not my camera yet, but I borrowed a digital camera for these pics.....

Full Tank Shot

Ok I will load more pics off my new camera to my photobucket soon so I can share more recent pics. I haven't got a tripod yet for my camera so my new pics are not that great yet. A tripod really helps make the close up shots sharper and clearer. I will share more pics soon. Peace!

Right on, thanks! The Blenny actually had to go, I only had him in the tank for a few days and he was just too big and was seriously disturbing everyone else in the tank. I got it from a friend who was having the same trouble. He was mighty aggressive for a bleeny. I gave him to a LFS.

I was going to say that it might be too large for the tank, and that might be its source of aggression but who knows. Now your clown can live in safety haha.

Thanks, no prob... My nitrates are usually around 10-20, I have it now to where I can base my water changes on how fast the algae grows on the glass. I add about a cup or two of R/O throughout each day to keep my salinity in check. The longest I will go is 2 weeks in between water changes, but usually once a week I will change about a gallon. I buy seawater from the LFS, its .99 cents a gallon and worth every penny in my opinion. It's pumped out of Half Moon Bay so its got plankton and stuff in it. I was using Grocery store bought purified water and was mixing w/ reefcrystals before, but I noticed change almost immediately once I started using the seawater. I still test the seawater each time I get a new batch, because it does vary. All I will adjust is Alk and PH, if at all. Usually I will make adjustments to PH/ Alk with my top off water, and not add anything to the seawater. I dont use any additives besides seachem reef buffer or builder, if at all. No carbon, no Calcium, just the seawater and top off water. I buy a huge sheet of pillow/quilt stuffing - sheets..... not the cotton fluffy stuff, and cut it up for my filter media. I change this out ever other day or so.
My params are usually about
pH 8.0-8.2
Alk 8.6 / 3.09
Ca 420-450
Nitrate 5-20
Salinity 1.025-1.026 (not sure if my swingarm is accurate or not!)

Yes Im sure that was the case, the Blenny was quite a swimmer, he probably needed more room.......my clown is happier.....but still working it out the other juvenile clown I added a month or two ago, they get better each day and share the frogspawn more willingly, but when it gets close to feeding time the larger, older clown gets to be kind of a punk. I could be overcrowding them, I will give them some more time before I seperate them.

1 red leg hermit, 1 orange leg hermit, 2 or 3 blue leg hermits
A bunch of snail-like slugs that are multiplying like crazy in all sizes, but eat only algae - so no problem yet, they do grow fast tho and there are a hell of a lot of them, especially when they all come out at night. - I will post a pic of them maybe someone can help ID.
