w/d filter and protein skimmer question

hi all im new to the sw hobby and im waiting on my stuff to come in.my lfs sold me a adavnced aquaria wetdry filter,a mag 9.5 pump...i asked where i put the protien skimmer they said in the sump part.my question is if i put it in there is it not defeating the purpose?all it is doing is putting the the it skimmed back into the water it picked up and also my mag 9.5 goes in there so is it even getting water to skim?

or does my mag pump hook directly up to the skimmer to pump water back to tank?

The skimmer has a cup on top that you empty as needed. It doesn't go back into your tank.

Hello. The proof is in the pudding. People get plenty of skimmate (smelly gunk) from the sump area. Your mag pump chart will tell you how many gph you've got going through the sump, and it's usually plenty to keep things moving.
