can we just add play sand and cycle a new tank with that, or would it be better to get some LS also to put in the top??

One problem with using that type of sand is that it is not processed to remove any metallics.....My LFS had been a dedicated user of the southdown stuff until the tanks he started setitng up started to get weird growths and staining.....turned out the south down had metallic content in the grains....Before i would personally add a bag of the stuff to a tank I would put some in saltwater etc first and see what happens further on down the road.....So if ya want about 600 or more pounds of southdown he still has a heap of it laying out behind his shop. I took about 400 pounds of it, but used it under the pavers for a walkway in our yard.
