When I first started keeping freshwater fish I bought a 5 gallon hex tank with a little light. Well no it is salt and I have a shrimp in there, my question is if I could just screw in a metal halide bulb in there or is there some kind of special fixture I will need?

you need a "special" ballast and socket...also...you would never fit a halide over a 7 gallon hex....

Even if you could get MH over that smalltank, the heat grom the bulb would probably cookwhatever you have in there...

I wouldn't worry about heat being a problem. The only way I could see you getting mh over that tank is if you bought a pendent to hang over it. I've seen a 400 watter over a 7g before.
You can't just screw a mh bulb, like I said earlier you'll probably want a pendent to hang over the tank.
