I dont think a yellow tang is neccesarily a hardy fish. Most are housed in too small of tanks and are known to be ick magnets.
Some grazing alge (i.e. established tank) is best for tangs. I'd look into clowns, chromis, and damsels. Probably the three most commonly available, cheapest, hardiest fish that you can get a hold of. My maroon clown has learned about the hobby as much as I have....
Hello HR,
I am in Cincy,
I have a tomato clownfish that is very hardy, I also have a pair of dalmation mollies that are acclimated to saltwater they are dam near bullet proof hardy and eat algae. all newbies will get a algae issue these will help with that. and best of all these are all inexpensive.
I wish you luck
Toodles,
Lawrence
