Wanting to add an Anemone

I have a 125gal tank with a 4' T-5 light system and two 1' LED light systems on each side of it and a strip of moon lights going across the back, a 20gal sump, with a heater, skimmer, media and bio-balls in it and a UV sterilizer, live rock and sand.
My system turned a year old in May of this year.
I would like to add an anemone, do you think that my tank is old enough or should I waite.
I had one that was given to me when my tank was only a few months old but I sold it to the fish shop because I was told on this site that it was to early to have one.
How long should I waite and what's the best kind to get?
Thank you.

I am not sure on your type of lights, however...An anemone should not be concidered until your tank is at least 6 months old. I don't know how old your system is so I'm just offering a friendly comment.
Also they are a pain in the back side, you have to cover your power heads, which makes them clog up and not put out as much water flow as they should, so consider that as well before you take the plunge to get one.

I am not that familiar with t-5's or led's so someone will come along that could better discuss the lighting. I keep mine under a halide/t-5 fixture.
I love my anemones. However, they can be a pain as stated above. They can travel if they aren't happy. I have been really lucky with my latest LTA's as they have stayed where I wanted them, but I did place them knowing where their requirements would best be met. You don't always get lucky. I have had them decide that the back of my tank under rocks was the "place to be".
Are you wanting to add a anemone with the hopes of hosting a clown? If so, you can start with the type of clown you want and work from that angle.
I got a quarter sized LTA for my tomato clowns and a year later it's over a foot across when extended. So keep that in mind, some people don't want to dedicate that much real estate.
If you aren't looking for a hosting situation, there are some really beautiful rock anemones as well as carpets (who are notorious fish eaters).
In another direction as well are tube anemones. They come in a large variety of beautiful colors and are spectacular. I have had experiences with them eating fish as well. The upside is they are non-photosythwhater.

Meowzers Tube doesn't eat fish ... YET...Mine did. They are beautiful. They are not light needy either, but a clown won't host them.

HEY...drop the YET attitude.....haha
I feed my tube anemone very well....it gets scallops every morning that it is open....and they are not a host anemone at all

I had mine over a year before it began it's killing spree. It wasn't hungry. It just got so big the fish couldn't get around it, they would get stung to death and dumped off. I only have a90g your tank is much bigger..I have hope for you to keep it, they are so pretty. I loved my beautiful fish killer.

My system is one year and five months old.
my powerheads are close to the top of my tank will the anemone get that high and what would I cover it with and how?
I have False percula cownfish that keep tring to host my mushroom coral but the mushroom is not having it so I think they would host an anemone if I got the right kind, I was looking at the Pink Tip Haitian Anemone what I've read they have been known to accept different species of clowns.
Does anyone know about this anemone?

Yes an anemone will get that high if so inclined. Most cover the powerheads with some type of netting. If the fish is trying to get jiggy with the mushroom it may also try one of the Euphyllia sp. coral, just a though there.
Clownfish Host Anemones

Thats A Hammer Coral right?
I have one in my tank and the clowns dont go near it, it's on one end of the tank the clowns stay on the other side maybe they just havent seen it.

I even had hair algie in the tank once and they tried to host that to.

Cover the power heads with filter mesh, kind of thread clear fishing line through it to kind of sew it on. My clowns like the Sabre Anemone. The reason the clowns will not go to the other side is that saltwater fish are very territorial. Everyone stays in their place and they get to live in harmony.
Anemones do not have eyes, no brain for that matter, just a mouth and an anus. They follow the water current so no matter where you have the power heads the anemone will find it and be drawn in. Once the anemone has settled, it is in it’s happy place…they will dig in and stay there but if disturbed they will go on the move again. You can’t move them where you want, they won’t stay. You can try to place them near the area you would like but don’t count on it staying there.
They do sting coral, my anemone settled on a rock with my clove polyps..now dead...if the clowns host it, the possibility of it eating fish is gone, the clowns won't let any other fish near it.

Anemones oral discs serves as the mouth/anus. Few good beginner anemones are bubble tipped, malu, pink tipped haitian, and long tipped.

LOL...I guess I did make it sound like it had two openings. He wants one the clowns may host, the sabre is the only one I know of...are your beginner ones also ones the cowns will try to host?

BTA are known for hosting cinnamon, clarkii, tomato & maroon. My ocellaris are hosting a bubble tipped. Sebaes are known to host cinnamon, clarkii, pink skunk, orange skunk, percula and red saddleback. The LTA will commonly host many types of clowns in the aquarium setting, and are known to host clarkii, pink skunk and saddleback. I know that the malu and pink tipped Haitian will also host clowns but i am having difficulty finding which ones.

Gemmy you rock! Back when I first started, everytime I'm in a store I would ask "is that an anemone my Perc clown will host?" and they answer me"no". I never googled or did any homework on it since it really wasn't important to me, and I never did learn what anemone goes with what clown...but if someone had told the info you just gave, I would of been very impressed..Good Job

Thanks. I did a bunch of research to figure out what anemone would go best in my tank. That is pretty much the way I approach anything.
